APA Competitive Company Auditions

2009 - 2010 Competitive Company auditions:

Petite / Junior Company (Up to 12yrs) - August 7, 2009 from 12:30pm - 4:30pm

Senior Company (13yrs and up) - August 14, 2009 from 12:30pm - 4:30pm

Below is a general overview of the APA Audition procedure.   Any dancer interested in auditioning should contact the studio and obtain a copy of the APA Competitive Company Handbook for complete rules/requirements/forms for company dancers.

All Academy of Performing Arts, New England students and any other interested dancers are welcome to attend. Dancers planning to audition must participate in the week long Dance intensive prior to the audition.  There will be two auditions – one for the Junior Company (all dancers from ages 5 – 12) and one for the senior company (all dancers age 13 and up).  Each audition will be subdivided into smaller age categories.  All students who attend the audition will be awarded a place on the Competitive Company.  The main purpose for these auditions is for proper choreographic placement.  All choreographic placement is by invitation only.  That stated, all students will be invited to participate in at least one dance.  The number of dances that a student is invited to participate in will depend on the dancer’s age and ability.

Students will be taught several short combinations including jazz, lyrical, musical theater, and tap.  Students are not expected to participate in a combination if it is a style they are not familiar with (i.e. If a student has never tapped before, they are not expected to participate in the tap portion of the audition!).  The participants will perform these combinations in small groups in front of our faculty.  Specific skills will be assessed by APA faculty members and choreographers and used for consideration for proper placement on the Company.  Some of these skills include the student’s ability to follow verbal directions, retain choreography, flexibility, technical ability, and performance quality.  Please note, this audition is purely for the purpose of assisting the choreographers so that APA can be sure that each and every dancer is placed with the appropriate group.  Remember, all students will receive placement on the company and be given the opportunity to experience the enjoyment of being a part of an award winning team.
